Role Profile

You will generate and increase mid-value giving income, including through ZSL’s Patron programme.  The postholder will be responsible for the recruitment, cultivation and stewardship of supporters within the mid-value giving at ZSL, underpinning strategic areas of delivery including engagement with supporters and providing essential income streams.


Based in the Philanthropy team, you will work closely with members of the Fundraising and Marketing teams to strengthen the ZSL supporter journey and maximise philanthropic support from individuals.  You will work closely with colleagues across ZSL to deliver compelling engagement plans for your supporters including regular communications and events, and proposals and reporting. 


Strong creative, interpersonal and communication skills are essential to this role, with the ability to drive innovation for your area of responsibility. This role requires excellent organisational skills to deliver comprehensive plans, strengthened by vital administration and process management.

Main Duties and Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on the delivery of the mid-value donor giving and Patron programmes, including recruitment, cultivation and stewardship activities
  • Support the Senior Philanthropy Manager and Executive Director for Fundraising to increase income and develop other fundraising opportunities
  • Represent the Philanthropy team internally and externally

Solicitation, Cultivation and Stewardship

  • Identify, cultivate and solicit prospects and convert them to active donors
  • Working with colleagues to deliver marketing and promotional activities
  • Support the evolving development of ZSL’s supporter journey, working closely with all associated teams.
  • Develop and manage a cultivation and stewardship plan for Patrons, other mid-value donors and prospects through post, email, phone and other materials like Patronage welcome packs.
  • Responsible for delivery of Patron and supporter benefits and activities such as events and tours.
  • Creation and delivery of compelling cases for support, collaborating with teams across ZSL to ensure part of strategic planning.

Administration, reporting and evaluation

  • Monitor and evaluate the programmes to ensure efficient and cost-effective delivery
  • Analysis of programmes to improve supporter engagement and income delivery
  • Oversee full administration for all mid-value giving programmes, including updating and maintaining databases, accurate reporting and budget management.
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of sector best practice through networking, benchmarking
  • Any other duties commensurate with the position as required

Building relationships

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to build and maintain relationships both internally and externally.
  • The ability to write compelling cases for support and to communicate these effectively through face-to-face presentations and in written copy.

  • To work with internal stakeholders to deliver comprehensive and cohesive donor management plans, including building cases for support.

  • To have excellent attention to detail when providing key information to donors and prospects including renewal information and donor reports.

  • The postholder must be able to respond to changing priorities to capitalise on potential opportunities.
  • The postholder should be able to adapt their approach and behaviour according to different supporter needs and preferences.
Working Conditions
  • This post is office based (when COVID restrictions allow) and some travel will be required
  • This post will require some outside working with direct exposure to the weather and animals
  • This post will require some evening and weekend work to support ZSL events and facilitate supporter visits.

The post holder has no direct reports but may be required to manage volunteers for fundraising activities.

Person Specification

Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience in building and writing compelling case for support and regular communications to supporters.
  • Experience in planning and delivering successful events.
  • Experience in administering budgets
  • Experience of supporting relationships between senior team members and fundraising prospects/donors
  • Knowledge of fundraising regulations and best practice including Gift Aid and GDPR

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, with the ability to write compelling cases for support and to communicate this effectively through both face-to-face presentations and in written copy
  • Strong organisational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritise and multi-task effectively.
  • High level of computer literacy including MS Office (Word, Excel and Powerpoint) and databases
  • Numeracy skills to work with budgets and financial reporting
  • Performance and target driven to achieve financial targets
  • A positive and enabling attitude and a pro-active, creative approach to problem-solving
  • Ability to be a self-starter and work on own initiative
  • Ability to think creatively with strong influencing skills

  • Knowledge and experience of delivering Patron programmes
