Role Profile

To raise funds from individual donors within the remit of the Private Philanthropy team, delivering a breadth of activity including recruitment and cultivation campaigns in support of ZSL’s mission objectives, and building and increasing a sustainable income stream from individual donors.


You will generate and increase donor income, especially supporting the Senior Private Philanthropy Manager on high value and major donor engagement activity.  The postholder will have the opportunity to undertake project activity work, developing strategic plans to underpin the activity of the Private Philanthropy team.  


A new role in ZSL’s expanding Philanthropy team, you will work closely with members of the Fundraising and Marketing teams to strengthen the ZSL supporter journey and maximise philanthropic support from individuals.  You will work closely with colleagues across ZSL to deliver project activity including cultivation campaigns, prospecting activity to identify new donors, and developing proposals working closely with the Senior Private Philanthropy Manager, our scientists, field conservationists and zoo teams.


Strong creative, interpersonal and communication skills are essential to this role.  Enthusiasm and innovation are also essential to delivering new and engaging programmes for ZSL, to support engagement with our donors and prospects. This role requires excellent organisational skills to deliver comprehensive plans, strengthened by vital administration and process management.

Main Duties and Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on the delivery of fundraising activities to raise income including prospecting, recruitment, cultivation and stewardship activities
  • Support the Philanthropy team including Senior Philanthropy Manager and Executive Director for Fundraising, Marketing & Engagement to increase income and develop other fundraising opportunities
  • Represent the Philanthropy team internally and externally


Solicitation, Cultivation and Stewardship

  • Identify, cultivate and solicit prospects and convert them to active donors
  • Working with colleagues to deliver marketing and promotional activities
  • Support the evolving development of ZSL’s supporter journey, working closely with all associated teams.
  • Develop and manage a cultivation and stewardship plan for individual donor audiences, through post, email, phone and other materials
  • Responsible for delivery of supporter benefits and activities such as events and tours.
  • Creation and delivery of compelling cases for support, collaborating with teams across ZSL to ensure part of strategic planning.


Administration, reporting and evaluation

  • Monitor and evaluate the fundraising activities to ensure efficient and cost-effective delivery
  • Analysis of activities to improve supporter engagement and income delivery
  • Support administration for individual giving programmes, including updating and maintaining databases, accurate reporting and budget contributions.
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of sector best practice through networking, benchmarking
  • Any other duties commensurate with the position as required


Building relationships

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to build and maintain relationships both internally and externally.
  • The ability to write compelling cases for support and to communicate these effectively through face-to-face presentations and in written copy.
  • To be considered a positive and ambitious leader for the Fundraising, Marketing and Engagement Directorate.
  • To work with internal stakeholders to deliver comprehensive and cohesive donor management plans, including building cases for support.


The post holder has no direct reports but may be required to manage volunteers for fundraising activities.



Financial resources

  • No sole budget accountability, though will be responsible for supporting all areas of income for ZSL’s Philanthropy team
  • Accurate and timely processing of income where necessary, including Gift Aid



  • Maintaining confidentiality of personal and financial information
  • Ensuring compliance at all times with Data Protection legislation and donor requests.



  • Upholding ZSL’s welfare standards when delivering activities involving animals

Mental Demands

  • The role will need to balance a varied workload of planning and administration ensuring priorities are identified and deadlines are met.
  • Able to identify organic opportunities from both prospects and current supporters and responding appropriately.
  • To have excellent attention to detail when providing key information to donors and prospects including renewal information and donor reports.
  • To use judgement to identify areas of work which would align with prospect interests.
  • Able to use initiative to change challenges into solutions



  • The postholder must be able to respond to changing priorities to capitalise on potential opportunities.
  • The postholder should be able to adapt their approach and behaviour according to different supporter needs and preferences.
Working Conditions
  • This post is office based, though with flexible working options (though delivery of external engagements with donors is prioritised).  Some travel will be required
  • This post will require some outside working with direct exposure to the weather and animals
  • This post will require some evening and weekend work to support ZSL events and facilitate supporter visits.

Person Specification

Experience and knowledge

  • A successful personal track record in donor development in the not-for-profit or cultural sectors.
  • Proven experience of developing and implementing acquisition plans
  • A successful track record in maintaining a network of contacts through excellent stewardship, cultivation and donor management.
  • Experience in building and writing compelling case for support and regular communications to supporters.
  • Experience in planning and delivering successful events.
  • Experience in administering budgets
  • Experience of supporting relationships between senior team members and fundraising prospects/donors
  • Knowledge of fundraising regulations and best practice including Gift Aid and GDPR


Skills and abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, with the ability to write compelling cases for support and to communicate this effectively through both face-to-face presentations and in written copy
  • Strong organisational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritise and multi-task effectively.
  • High level of computer literacy including MS Office (Word, Excel and Powerpoint) and databases
  • Numeracy skills to work with budgets and financial reporting
  • Performance and target driven to achieve financial targets
  • A positive and enabling attitude and a pro-active, creative approach to problem-solving
  • Ability to be a self-starter and work on own initiative
  • Ability to think creatively with strong influencing skills

  • Experience of donor fundraising
  • Good understanding of animal conservation and science
